Family and Household • Restraint • Adult Conflict
Sons and daughters are not tools for adult hurt. They are souls entrusted to care, instruction, tenderness, and the fear of the Lord.

Adult pain can look for an outlet. In a strained family, that outlet may become a question, a sigh, a complaint, or a request for information. The adult may not intend harm, but the young person may still feel pulled into a story too heavy for them.
Colossians warns fathers not to exasperate their sons and daughters. Proverbs says reckless words pierce like a sword. Jesus teaches His people to treat others as they would want to be treated. These passages speak plainly to the way adults use words in the home.
The Pull Can Be Subtle
It may sound like, “What did your dad say?” or “Did your mother mention me?” It may sound like a prayer request with too much detail, a joke that carries bitterness, or praise offered only when the young person agrees with one side.
The issue is not merely the words. It is the weight underneath them. A son or daughter should not feel that love from one parent requires distance from the other.
Adult grief must not make a young heart choose sides.
Let Them Love Without Guilt
When ordinary parental relationship is present, sons and daughters should be free to love both parents without being punished by mood, silence, or suspicion. Divided loyalty can wound quietly because it teaches the young to manage adult responses.
Restraint may feel costly to the adult who wants to be understood. But the young person’s good must matter more than the adult’s need to be vindicated in the moment.
Practice Holy Restraint
Holy restraint does not mean pretending. It means placing adult anger, grief, and frustration before the Lord and before wise believers rather than pouring them into young ears.
Adult Commitments
- Do not ask sons or daughters to report adult information.
- Do not vent about the other parent to them.
- Do not use affection, gifts, or access to gain agreement.
- Do not make them responsible for steadying your heart.

Choose Their Good Before God
A son or daughter is not an audience, messenger, witness, or argument. They are a person before God. They need adults who can grieve without recruiting them, speak truth without poisoning them, and practice love without demanding allegiance.
The Lord sees the restraint practiced in private. He is honored when adults carry adult burdens faithfully.
Prayer: Lord, forgive every way adult pain has spilled onto young hearts. Teach us restraint, truth, repentance, and love that honors You. Amen.
