Covenant Marriage • Hard Hearts • Holy Warnings
Scripture speaks soberly about hard hearts because covenant sin is never a small matter before God.
Jesus did not treat hard-heartedness lightly. When questioned about marriage and divorce, He pointed back to God's design from the beginning and named hardness of heart as the reason Moses permitted what was not the original design.
Matthew and Mark both record Jesus returning the conversation to creation. Hebrews warns believers not to be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. These warnings are not harsh decorations. They are mercies meant to awaken the heart.
Hardness Explains, but It Does Not Excuse
Jesus named hardness of heart, but He did not bless it. Hardness may explain why covenant breaking becomes thinkable, but it does not make covenant breaking holy.
This matters because the heart often wants permission more than repentance. Scripture's warnings interrupt that desire and call the soul back to God.
A holy warning is mercy when it wakes the heart before sin hardens further.
Sin Hardens by Deceit
Hebrews says sin is deceitful. It rarely announces its full destination at the beginning. It persuades the heart to rename disobedience, delay confession, nurse resentment, or treat covenant lightly.
Because sin deceives, believers need exhortation. We need the Word, faithful correction, and humble fellowship that helps the heart remain tender before God.
Return to the Beginning
Jesus answered confusion about marriage by returning to the beginning. God made them male and female. The two become one flesh. What God has joined, man must not separate.
Returning to the beginning is not nostalgia. It is submission to God's design. The Lord defines marriage more truly than the wounded, weary, or hardened heart does.
Questions for a Hardening Heart
- What sin have I begun to rename?
- Where have I resisted correction from Scripture?
- What confession have I delayed?
- Who can exhort me faithfully before God?
Hear the Warning
If Scripture warns, listen. Do not despise the mercy of being interrupted before the heart grows harder.
The Lord can soften the contrite. He can lead sinners to repentance. Hear the warning, and return to Him.
Prayer: Lord, keep my heart tender before You. Let Your warnings lead me to repentance and renewed faithfulness. Amen.
