Covenant Marriage • Headship • The Cross
Primary Scripture: Ephesians 5:23-25; Luke 22:25-27; Philippians 2:5-8
Christian headship cannot be understood apart from the cross. If it is separated from Christ crucified, it becomes distorted quickly. Scripture gives husbands no permission to imitate worldly rule while using biblical language.
Paul roots marriage in Christ and the church. The husband is called to love as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her. That sentence places headship under sacrifice before it places anything in the hand.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her.”

Authority Must Kneel
Jesus warned His disciples not to imitate the rulers of the Gentiles who lord authority over others. Among His people, greatness takes the form of service. The Lord of glory took the place of a servant.
That truth must govern the home. Headship is not a platform for ego. It is a summons to answer before God for the good of the household.
The Cross Exposes Selfish Leadership
A husband cannot claim Christlike headship while refusing Christlike humility. The cross exposes every appetite to dominate, every excuse for laziness, and every habit of demanding service while withholding it.
Headship under Christ is not self-exaltation. It is responsibility shaped by sacrificial love.
Lead Toward Holiness
Faithful headship is practical. It prays. It repents. It tells the truth. It bears burdens. It seeks the spiritual good of the marriage rather than simply preserving comfort.
Philippians 2 calls believers to have the mind of Christ, who humbled Himself. The husband who would lead biblically must first be led by that mind.
Responsibility Without Pride
The cross gives responsibility a different tone. It does not make a husband timid about obedience, but it forbids swagger. A man under Christ cannot use Scripture to avoid repentance, tenderness, patience, or prayer.
Leadership in the home should make Christ easier to see, not harder. It should make truth clearer, mercy nearer, and obedience more beautiful. Anything less must be brought back under the Lord.
Return Leadership to Jesus
Every husband stands under authority before he exercises any. The question is not whether Scripture speaks of headship. It does. The question is whether headship is being learned from Christ or borrowed from the world.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, place every form of leadership in my home under Your cross. Teach humility, courage, service, and holy love. Amen.
