Covenant Marriage • Purity • Reverence

Primary Scripture: Hebrews 13:4; 1 Corinthians 6:18-20; Song of Solomon 2:15-16

The marriage bed is not outside discipleship. Scripture speaks of it with honor and sobriety. God made marital union good, and He also commands holiness in how husband and wife receive and steward that gift.

Hebrews says marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled. That command belongs to real marriages with real weariness, desire, disappointment, repentance, and hope.

“Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled.”

Hebrews 13:4, NASB 1995

Honor What God Honors

Christian teaching should neither despise marital intimacy nor treat it as detached from holiness. The Lord who made the body also claims the body. Paul says believers are not their own, for they were bought with a price.

This means the body is not a bargaining tool, a stage for selfishness, or an object detached from covenant. It belongs to the Lord and must be offered to Him in purity.

Small Compromises Matter

Song of Solomon warns about little foxes ruining the vineyards. In marriage, small compromises can quietly damage trust, tenderness, and holiness. What is hidden from people is still open before God.

Reverence for the Lord brings honor, tenderness, and holiness into the most private places of marriage.

Bring Desire Under Christ

Desire is not lord. Christ is Lord. The fear of the Lord teaches husband and wife to reject lust, selfishness, comparison, secrecy, and bitterness. It also teaches gratitude for the good gift God has given within covenant.

Purity is not merely the absence of outward failure. It is the presence of reverence, gratitude, self-control, and love that seeks the good of the other before God.

Honor Requires Tenderness

Reverence does not make the private life cold. It makes it holy. The fear of the Lord teaches tenderness because the other person is not an object of appetite, but a covenant companion made by God.

Where there has been selfishness, confession is needed. Where there has been neglect, patience and repentance are needed. The Lord is merciful to cleanse what is brought into His light.

Let Reverence Heal the Private Life

Ask the Lord to govern the private life of the marriage. Let confession replace secrecy. Let gratitude replace entitlement. Let honor replace carelessness. The marriage bed belongs under the fear of the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, make our marriage honorable before You. Govern our bodies, desires, thoughts, and private life by Your holiness. Amen.
