Healing and Forgiveness • Dependence • Mercy When It Feels Impossible
Some believers know they are called to forgive and still feel unable to begin. Scripture does not flatter the wound, but it does bring the wounded heart to Christ for mercy.

There are wounds where forgiveness feels impossible. The believer may know the command, understand the doctrine, and still feel unable to imagine a heart free from the debt. That struggle should not be answered with shallow pressure.
Jesus teaches forgiveness with sobering seriousness. Colossians calls believers to forgive as the Lord forgave them. From the cross, Jesus prayed for those who crucified Him. Scripture does not make forgiveness optional, but it also sends the wounded heart to Christ rather than to self-strength.
Start With Honesty Before God
Do not begin by pretending forgiveness feels easy. Begin by telling the Lord the truth: “I know Your command, and I need mercy to obey it.” That prayer is not rebellion. It is dependence.
The Lord can work with honest weakness. He resists pride, not need.
Forgiveness begins not with pretending strength, but with bringing helplessness to the mercy of Christ.
Remember the Mercy You Have Received
Jesus anchors forgiveness in the mercy of God. The forgiven servant in Matthew 18 forgets the mercy shown to him and becomes harsh toward another. The warning is serious because forgiven people are called to become forgiving people.
This does not make another person’s sin small. It makes God’s mercy large. The cross is the place where truth about sin and mercy for sinners meet.
Remembering mercy is not a technique for minimizing pain. It is worship. The believer stands before the cross and admits that forgiveness is never cheap, never casual, and never detached from the mercy of God.
Forgiveness May Need Repeated Prayer
Some forgiveness is prayed through many times. The heart releases revenge and then finds anger returning. Bring it back to God again. Forgiveness is not false because it requires repeated surrender.
When Forgiveness Feels Impossible
- Confess the command of Christ without pretending it feels easy.
- Ask the Lord to free you from revenge.
- Pray for mercy to remember the mercy you have received.
- Seek counsel if bitterness has become deeply rooted.

Ask for the Next Act of Obedience
You may not know how the whole journey will unfold. Ask for the next act of obedience. It may be an honest prayer, a refusal to rehearse revenge, a confession of bitterness, or a willingness to receive counsel.
The Lord is able to lead the wounded heart into forgiveness one obedient step at a time.
Do not measure the reality of obedience only by how easy it feels. Some obedience trembles. Some obedience prays through clenched grief. Some obedience begins with asking God to make willingness where willingness is not yet strong.
Christ is patient with needy people. Bring Him the need and ask for grace to obey.
He knows how to lead the heart where command and mercy meet.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I need mercy to forgive. Free me from revenge, remind me of Your grace, and lead me in the next act of obedience. Amen.
