Wisdom and Discernment • Decisions • Self-Control
Anger, grief, fear, and urgency can speak loudly in crisis. Scripture teaches believers to slow down, listen to wisdom, and refuse decisions ruled by the flesh.

A marriage crisis can make feelings loud. Anger wants a quick answer. Fear wants control. Grief wants relief. Urgency says, “Do something now.” But loudness is not wisdom.
Proverbs praises slowness to anger. James calls believers to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Jeremiah warns that the heart is not a trustworthy lord. Scripture does not deny strong feeling; it refuses to make feeling sovereign.
Urgency Can Borrow Wisdom’s Voice
Urgency often sounds persuasive. It says delay is weakness, restraint is fear, and immediate action is courage. Sometimes action is needed, but crisis urgency should be tested before it is obeyed.
A decision made to relieve pressure may create more sorrow later. Wisdom asks whether the step is governed by truth or merely by the need to stop feeling unsettled.
A loud heart is not always a wise heart.
Slow Down Before You Speak or Act
Slowness is not passivity. It is often obedience. A pause can make room for prayer, counsel, Scripture, and self-control. It can keep the tongue from saying what repentance will later have to repair.
If the decision still seems wise after prayer, sleep, counsel, and Scripture, it will usually remain wise. If it only survives in the heat of the moment, be careful.
Test the Fruit of the Decision
Ask what the decision is likely to produce. Will it serve truth, repentance, peaceable wisdom, and obedience? Or will it feed retaliation, pride, fear, and confusion?
Before a Crisis Decision
- Pray before responding.
- Wait long enough for anger to lose the steering wheel.
- Seek counsel from someone who fears the Lord.
- Ask whether the decision can stand before Scripture.

Let Wisdom Rule the Moment
The Lord is not honored by every urgent action. He is honored by obedience. Sometimes obedience speaks quickly; often it waits long enough to be governed by wisdom.
When feelings try to rule decisions, return the throne to God. Ask Him for self-control, humility, and the courage to act only in the light.
Strong feeling is not itself sin, but it must be shepherded by truth. Anger may reveal that something matters, but it cannot be allowed to rule the tongue. Grief may show what has been lost, but it cannot become the final judge. Fear may warn the heart, but it cannot become lord.
The Spirit of God produces self-control. That fruit is a mercy in moments when the heart wants to move faster than wisdom allows.
When self-control holds the moment, regret is often spared room to grow.
Prayer: Lord, keep my decisions from being ruled by anger, grief, fear, or haste. Teach me wisdom, self-control, and obedience under Your Word. Amen.
